Abstract

REFERENCES 1 Utopianism for a Dying Planet: Life After Consumerism, by Gregory Claeys. Claeys's rich and absorbing reflections rightly remind us that the articulation of something different is itself a necessary condition for its realisation and that utopianism's "futurological function" is vital for extending "the boundaries of the possible". "Our survival", Claeys writes, 'depends on wedding a much stronger sense of community to an ethos of sufficiency, and substituting an atheism of sustainability for a religion of consumerism'.
