Abstract
The article focuses on a proposed formula by the Indian government to increase the Lok Sabha’s strength by 50 percent while proportionately raising each state’s representation, aiming to address concerns from southern states ahead of the upcoming delimitation exercise. This formula seeks to balance population-based seat allocation, which could reduce the relative influence of states with slower population growth, particularly in the South, by increasing their seats beyond what a strict 2011 Census-based calculation would allow. Examples include Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Telangana, and Karnataka, all projected to gain more seats under the formula than by census figures alone. The proposal reflects efforts to maintain constitutional requirements for population-to-seat ratios while managing political sensitivities between faster-growing northern states and southern states wary of losing parliamentary weight.
