Abstract
The article focuses on evidence-based strategies for teaching multidigit addition and subtraction to students with learning disabilities (LD) in mathematics, emphasizing conceptual understanding through place value and visual representations. It highlights the concrete–semi-concrete–abstract (CSA) instructional framework and five key strategies: decomposition, hundreds chart use, the jump strategy, compensation, and the standard algorithm taught with CSA. These approaches aim to move students beyond rote memorization toward flexible, conceptual mastery of whole number operations. Classroom scenarios illustrate how special education teachers implement these strategies to improve students' understanding and performance in multidigit computations.
