There's a Thin Line Between Numerators and Denominators: Addressing Academic and Behavioral Needs of Students With EBD Using SRSD Fractions.

Abstract
The article focuses on SRSD Fractions, an instructional framework based on Self-Regulated Strategy Development (SRSD) designed to teach adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators, particularly benefiting students with math difficulties and emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD). SRSD Fractions uses the mnemonic FILMS—Find denominators, Identify multiples, Locate least common multiple, Multiply to create new fractions, and Solve the problem—to guide students through conceptual and procedural steps, integrating self-regulation strategies such as goal setting and self-monitoring. Empirical studies demonstrate SRSD Fractions’ effectiveness in improving fraction computation skills for elementary students, including those with EBD, by promoting engagement and mastery through scaffolded lessons and behavioral supports. Free resources and lesson plans are available online to assist educators in implementing this evidence-based approach in diverse classroom settings.
