Abstract

In this study, the experimental results of the auxetic behavior of a crumpled metamaterial manufactured with aluminum foil are presented. To measure the longitudinal and transverse deformations, in full field, on the surface of the crumpled aluminum specimens under uniaxial compression, the 2D digital image correlation (DIC) method was used because conventional deformation measurement methods, such as gauges or extensometers, cannot be used owing to the irregular topography on the surface of the specimens. The results obtained exhibit the auxetic nature of the aluminum crumpled material, with Poisson's ratio values that vary from + −0.17 to = −0.02 for relative densities in the range ρr= 0.07 to ρr= 0.21.
