Abstract
The Institute of Computing Technology was established by the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1956, with its Computational Mathematics Laboratory mainly undertaking computational tasks in science and engineering. The Computational Mathematics Laboratory later developed into the present Institute of Computational Mathematics and Scientific/Engineering Computing. The article delves into the early history of the Institute of Computational Mathematics and Scientific/Engineering Computing, following its development from the Electronic Computer Research Group to the Computational Mathematics Group in the Institute of Mathematics, and eventually to the Computational Mathematics Laboratory of the Institute of Computing Technology. It reveals why Hua Loo-Keng chose Min Nai-Ta to develop the computer, identifies the actual leaders of the Computational Mathematics Group, and outlines the main academic activities carried out during different periods. Additionally, the paper explores how Hua Loo-Keng established the Computational Mathematics Group of the Institute of Mathematics and the Computational Mathematics Laboratory of the Institute of Computing Technology, which drew on the experience from the Soviet Union, and examines the rationale and process behind Feng Kang's transition from the Institute of Mathematics to the Computational Mathematics Laboratory of the Institute of Computing Technology.
