Mathematical modeling: a study of multidisciplinary benefits in the math classroom.

Abstract

The article focuses on the role and benefits of mathematical modeling in secondary mathematics education, emphasizing its underutilization despite its potential to develop critical thinking, creativity, and real-world problem-solving skills. Mathematical modeling involves using mathematical language and concepts from various disciplines to represent and solve authentic problems, often allowing multiple valid solutions. A case study conducted in two diverse high schools demonstrated that students applied a wide range of mathematical concepts—such as algebra, geometry, proportions, inequalities, and graphing—to solve real-world modeling problems, showing increased engagement and deeper understanding. The study also highlights that current curricula, including the Common Core State Standards, provide foundational knowledge but often lack explicit emphasis on modeling, suggesting a need for greater integration of math modeling to enhance student learning outcomes and motivation.
