Abstract
A recent study conducted at State University explored the role of relational understanding in mathematics education. The researchers found that students with high self-esteem demonstrated a stronger foundation in their understanding of mathematical concepts and were able to fulfill all stages of problem-solving. On the other hand, students with medium and low self-esteem only fulfilled two stages of problem-solving. The study highlights the importance of relational understanding and suggests that students can still use concepts they have learned even if they cannot remember specific formulas.
