Abstract
This study explores the relationship between architectural form and structural efficiency in tall buildings with diagrid structures. To obtain the formal parameters that affect the structural behavior in a diagrid structure, a set of 36 parametrically generated tall buildings is analyzed, each with a diagrid structure applied through a parametric process (using Grasshopper and Karamba3D). The models are subjected to lateral seismic loads, and their structural behavior is compared. Departing from previous methods, this study introduces three form‐generation methods to ensure comparability: (1) equal geometry plan areas, (2) equal geometry plan perimeters, and (3) equal geometry plan areas and diagrid spans. Key parameters for structural efficiency are top plan displacement, total structure weight, and an original index for expected design weight. Findings reveal that varying top and bottom plan geometries significantly impact structural efficiency. A trend is observed where an increased number of sides in the polygon geometry of the bottom plan enhances structural efficiency, with the top plan geometry fixed. Notably, the third method, previously unexplored, produces precise and robust results. This study sets a precedent for using this comparability criterion to investigate the interplay between architectural form and structural efficiency in the initial design stages of diagrid tall buildings.
