Abstract

BothLee and Grant receive some censorious treatment; Lee forpermitting the salient to exist and ordering thewithdrawal of the all-critical artillery, and Grant forfailing to coordinate the first assaults more effectivelyagainst the exposed position. Hismost recent work, The Heart of Hell, may well do the samefor the climactic battle of Spotsylvania, the secondtitanic contest between Ulysses S. Grant's Union Army ofthe Potomac and Lee's Confederates in the climacticOverland Campaign of spring 1864.
