Abstract
German lawmakers have approved a €4.7 billion order for four additional U212CD submarines from Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems GmbH, along with funds for potential contract changes, operational costs, and financial padding in case of Norway's withdrawal. The purchase is part of Germany's efforts to modernize its armed forces, prompted by Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Germany and Norway are collaborating on submarine fleets, with Norway also purchasing six U212CD vessels. The submarines are intended to counter maritime threats, particularly from the active Russian navy in the North Sea, northern Atlantic, and Baltic regions. [Extracted from the article]
