Abstract
This article focuses on the characteristics and medical implications of burn injuries sustained by Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldiers during the Swords of Iron (SOI) War, an ongoing armed conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza since October 2023. The retrospective cohort study analyzed 2,627 injured military personnel treated between October 2023 and April 2024, identifying 249 burn casualties—all male combat soldiers with a median age of 22—most of whom suffered combined injuries from explosions in urban close-contact warfare. Findings highlight a higher incidence and severity of burns, including second- to fourth-degree burns and larger total body surface area (TBSA) affected, compared to previous conflicts, emphasizing the importance of advanced personal protective equipment, rapid evacuation, and updated emergency burn treatment protocols. The study underscores the need for continued research and adaptation of medical and protective strategies to address the unique challenges of modern urban combat burn injuries.
