Abstract

This article focuses on the role and impact of ROLE 2 medical support, which includes a surgical team, onboard the French Navy's landing helicopter dock (LHD) MISTRAL. A retrospective study of surgeries performed between 2011 and 2022 showed that 85.2% of patients undergoing minor or major surgery were treated onboard, significantly reducing the need for Medical Evacuations (MEDEVACs), which are costly and time-consuming at sea. Most procedures involved abscess drainage and orthopedic or general surgery, with a low mortality rate of 3.7%. The presence of ROLE 2 enhances surgical care quality, supports sailor retention onboard, and provides opportunities for training general practitioners, although maintaining surgical team skills during deployments remains a challenge.
