Abstract

The article discusses Anthony M. Eames's book, "A Voice in Their Own Destiny: Reagan, Thatcher, and Public Diplomacy in the Nuclear 1980s," which examines how the Reagan administration and Thatcher's Premiership responded to public demands to curtail the nuclear arms race during the late Cold War. Eames argues that public opinion became a major force in shaping international relations during this period, leading the US and UK governments to reinvent their public diplomacy. The book explores the transatlantic antinuclear movement, its relationship to religious bodies, and issues of gender, race, labor, and capitalism. It also discusses the diplomacy surrounding the INF Treaty and the transformation of public diplomacy in the Cold War endgame. The article praises Eames's thorough research and argues that the book challenges traditional Cold War historiography. [Extracted from the article]
