Abstract
This article focuses on the development and implementation of a simulation learning exercise (SLE) that integrates unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), commonly known as drones, into healthcare education to address emergency management of opioid overdoses in rural settings. The SLE involved nursing students responding to a simulated opioid overdose where naloxone was delivered via UAS, followed by continuing care scenarios emphasizing therapeutic communication and substance abuse assessment. Results indicated improved student knowledge, engagement, and empathy toward individuals with substance use disorders, highlighting the potential of UAS technologies to enhance healthcare delivery and education in resource-limited rural areas. The article also discusses the broader applications and benefits of UAS in rural healthcare, including overcoming access barriers and supporting emergency responses.
