Abstract

"The Apache Diaspora: Four Centuries of Displacement and Survival" by Paul Conrad is a book that explores the experiences of the Apache people in the face of colonialism and forced migration. The author uses the concept of diaspora to highlight the resilience and ability of the Apache people to maintain their identity and kinship ties across different locations. The book follows their journey from colonial New Mexico to the twentieth century, emphasizing the importance of place-making and home-making in their struggle for survival. Conrad's work contributes to the growing historiography on transnational Indigenous peoples and their experiences of forced removal and displacement. The book primarily focuses on the Southern Apaches, but acknowledges the different historical experience of the Western Apaches. It is praised for its inclusion of previously unknown sources and its humanizing portrayal of Apache individuals. [Extracted from the article]
