Abstract
This article focuses on the management of genitourinary (GU) trauma in modern military combat, emphasizing its increasing incidence and complexity due to improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in conflicts such as Iraq and Afghanistan. It reviews patterns of injury—including renal, ureteral, bladder, penile, urethral, testicular, central nervous system, and female GU trauma—and outlines treatment protocols across different levels of military medical care, from Role 1 prehospital providers to Role 2 and Role 3 surgical facilities. The study highlights the critical role of Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) guidelines, the need for enhanced pre-deployment training for non-urological surgeons and medics, and the importance of integrating GU trauma management into broader polytrauma care to improve survival and long-term quality of life for affected service members. Additionally, it underscores the potential benefits of improved protective equipment and specialized training to reduce injury severity and optimize battlefield medical readiness.
