Abstract
16 May 1945WAR IN FOCUSThousands of Parisians gather on the Champs-Elysees as a military aircraft flies over the Arc de Triomphe in the background. Parisians held this celebration for the festival of Joan of Arc, one of the patriotic events organised by Charles de Gaulle to reunite the French people. De Gaulle ordered another mass gathering on 11 November for Armistice Day. In 1981, after decades of debate, 8 May became an official bank holiday in France– Victory Day – to celebrate Nazi Germany's unconditional surrender in WWII.PHOTO (BLACK & WHITE) [Extracted from the article]
