Abstract
The article discusses the Battle of Manila Bay, a naval engagement that took place during the Spanish-American War in 1898. The United States' Asiatic Squadron, led by Commodore George Dewey, faced off against the Spanish fleet in the Philippines. Despite being outnumbered, the American ships successfully engaged and defeated the Spanish fleet, sinking several ships and causing significant damage. The battle is seen as a turning point in the war and had unforeseen consequences, leading to the subsequent Philippine-American War. Commodore Dewey was celebrated as a hero in the United States, but the battle is viewed by many as a catastrophe for the Filipino people. [Extracted from the article]
