Abstract
The article focuses on John Ryder, a veteran of the Anglo-Sikh Wars, detailing his life from his birth around 1825 in Twyford, Leicestershire, to his death in 1909. Ryder, who initially worked as a constable in the Leicestershire Police, authored a significant military memoir titled *Four Years Service in India*, published in 1853, which provides a rare first-hand account of a soldier's experiences during the Victorian era. His military service included participation in the Second Anglo-Sikh War, where he witnessed significant battles and the harsh realities of life in the army, ultimately leading to his disillusionment and discharge. After returning to England, he had a brief career in law enforcement before becoming a porter at Belvoir Castle, where he lived until his retirement. [Extracted from the article]
