Abstract

The article focuses on the rapid growth of surveillance in the U.S. and the threats it poses to privacy, independence, and democracy. It discusses the history of public attitudes toward surveillance and how the events of 9/11 led to the USA Patriot Act, which rolled back the remaining safeguards created during the Church Committee era. It also highlights how new technologies, including artificial intelligence, has made it easier to track people's movements, discourse, and politics.
