Abstract
The article discusses the donation of Corporal Walter H Stickler's 'Splatter' mask to the Tank Museum, which he used during the Battle of Cambrai in 1917. The mask, with thick leather slits over the eyes and chainmail over the mouth, chin, and neck, provided basic protection against dangers like 'spalling' and 'splash' faced by tankers. Stickler, a gunner aboard a Mark IV tank, displayed gallantry during the battle and earned a Distinguished Conduct Medal for his actions. The Tank Museum now displays the 'Splatter' mask as a reminder of the perilous conditions faced by tank crews during World War I. [Extracted from the article]
