Abstract
The text reviews three works focused on distinct aspects of American history and culture. The first examines the shift in birth practices in the northern plains, highlighting how the transition from midwife-led home births to doctor- and public health-controlled births altered community power dynamics and marginalized women's expertise. The second is a biography of Stimson E. "Jack" Stilwell, an army scout and lawman whose life illustrates the complex interactions among Native American tribes, settlers, and the U.S. government during the transition from the Old West to a more regulated society. The third work explores the tradition of fiddle music in Missouri from the 1960s folk revival to the present, combining oral histories, musical transcriptions, and recordings to document regional cultural heritage. Each work contributes to understanding historical change through personal narratives and community experiences.
