Abstract
In the book "Violent Resistance: Militia Formation and Civil War in Mozambique" by Corinna Jentzsch, the author explores the role of community-inspired resistance groups, specifically the Naparama, in the Mozambican civil war. Jentzsch combines ethnographic insight with archival research to trace the emergence and evolution of these militias. The book challenges traditional definitions of militias and emphasizes the agency of civilian actors in armed conflicts. While the book provides detailed analysis, it leaves some questions unanswered, such as the role of uncertainty and logistics in civil wars. Overall, "Violent Resistance" contributes to the understanding of armed politics and is relevant for researchers, policymakers, and peacebuilders. [Extracted from the article]
