Abstract
The article focuses on the Bayles Boat Shop in Port Jefferson, Long Island, and its current project to build a reproduction of Caleb Brewster’s whaleboat, a vessel historically used during the American Revolution by Brewster, a member of the Culper Spy Ring. Established in 1994 as part of the Long Island Seaport and Eco Center (LISEC), the shop continues the region’s three-century shipbuilding tradition, which peaked in the mid-19th century. Inspired by local historian Christopher Ryon, a volunteer team began the project in 2022 using naval architect William A. Baker’s drawings, with the boat scheduled for launch in 2026. The project aims to highlight the historical significance of Brewster’s role in Revolutionary War espionage and the craftsmanship involved in traditional wooden boatbuilding.
