Abstract
This article provides a brief overview of key events that occurred during the month of May 1944 in World War II. The Battle of Wakde took place from 17-21 May, with the US Army and Royal Australian Navy launching an invasion of Japanese-held Dutch New Guinea. The Crimean Offensive ended with the evacuation of over 30,000 German and Romanian troops. Operation Steinbock, the Luftwaffe's strategic bombing campaign against England, was called off after suffering heavy losses. The Siege of Myitkyina in Burma saw Allied forces successfully attack the Myitkyina airstrip and eventually force the Japanese to abandon the town. The West Loch Disaster occurred during preparations for Operation Forager, resulting in the sinking of six Landing Ships, Tank (LST) and the deaths of 163 men. [Extracted from the article]
