Abstract

The article discusses middle school 6th grade students' study of the Harlem Hellfighters, a fighting unit of African Americans who volunteered to fight in Europe during World War II, through trade books and visual primary sources. Topics discussed include a historical overview of the Harlem Hellfighters, history teachers' use of the book "The Harlem Hellfighters: When Pride Met Courage" by Walter Dean Myers and Bill Miles as a resource, and students' paintings and written work about the unit.
