Abstract

The article discusses the ongoing great-power competition in international relations, contrasting two worldviews: the continental and the maritime. Continental powers, such as China and Russia, prioritize territorial control and military strength, often leading to conflict and authoritarianism. In contrast, maritime states, exemplified by the United States and the United Kingdom, focus on wealth generation through trade and international cooperation, fostering a rules-based order that benefits global prosperity. The article argues that the U.S. must adhere to maritime strategies to counter continentalist threats and maintain its global leadership, warning against a shift towards isolationism that could undermine alliances and economic stability.
