Abstract
Nigeria has an abundance of oil resources, with oil extraction comprising a substantial part of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The oil is primarily sourced from the southern regions of Nigeria, specifically the Niger Delta area. Unfortunately, a significant portion of the revenue generated from oil has not been reinvested in improving the region's infrastructure and addressing its social needs. Consequently, this has resulted in a widespread uprising among the local population against the Nigerian government. Various militant groups emerged, initiating attacks on the pipelines of major oil companies, and kidnapping their executives for ransom. These ransoms were then used to procure additional weaponry to support their armed struggle. These disparate militant factions eventually united under a collective entity known as "The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta" (MEND). Since 2006, MEND has been responsible for the destruction of oil pipelines, the kidnapping of petroleum company employees and clashes with government forces. At the helm of MEND was Henry Emomotimi Okah, who resided in South Africa along with his wife and four children. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
