Abstract

A reprint of the article "The Causes of the American Civil War: Recent Interpretations and New Directions" by Eric Foner is presented. Topics include the author's response to historian David Donald's article in 1960 claiming that the study of the causes of the Civil War was dead, the concerns of historians on the issues of race and war in U.S. history in the 1960s and the reasons for the disagreements of interpretation that persist in the face of increased historical knowledge on the Civil War.
