Abstract
The article focuses on the celebration of VE Day on 8 May 1945, marking the end of the Second World War in Europe, with St Paul's Cathedral in London as a central symbol of the event. Despite the extensive damage caused by the Blitz, the cathedral remained largely intact and was brightly illuminated for the victory celebrations, which included ten consecutive thanksgiving services attended by large crowds. The Dean of St Paul's offered prayers for those still fighting in the Far East, reflecting the ongoing conflict beyond Europe. The day combined joyous festivities with somber remembrance, as highlighted by Winston Churchill's radio address and the public gatherings at Buckingham Palace and Piccadilly Circus. Two members of the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS) were responsible for lighting the cathedral, marking a significant moment of hope and relief.
