Abstract
The article reviews two recent publications focused on historical perspectives of the American West. The first, *Ambitious Honor* by James E. Mueller, is a biography of George Armstrong Custer that highlights his military career and personal ambitions but is critiqued for significant omissions and factual inaccuracies regarding Custer’s life and actions. The second, *Western Lands, Western Voices*, edited by Gregory E. Smoak, is a collection of thirteen essays exploring public history in the American West, emphasizing diverse viewpoints including Indigenous perspectives and the complex relationship between academic and public history. Both works contribute to ongoing discussions about the interpretation and representation of Western history.
