Abstract

The article discusses the political landscape in Sri Lanka as the country prepares for upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections. It highlights the self-interest and power accumulation driving the political players in Southern Sri Lanka, while emphasizing the need for attention to the changes in Tamil politics. The article suggests that the election of a Tamil nationalist to a significant position in the Illankai Thamil Arasuk Katchi (ITAK) party reflects the ongoing alienation felt by the North-East population. It also raises concerns about the dissatisfaction among the Tamil political community and the potential for identity politics and secession if genuine growth and retributive justice are not addressed. The article further discusses the complicated alliances and uncertainties within the ruling party, the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), and the growing popularity of opposition groups like the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) and Samagi Jana Balawegaya. It concludes by highlighting the uncertainty and instability in the political scene and the impending breakup of the SLPP's alliance with the United National Party (UNP).
