Abstract

Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, has been released after a 14-year battle against extradition. He appeared in a federal court in Saipan, a U.S. territory, and pleaded guilty to a felony for conspiring to obtain and disclose classified national-defense information. As part of a plea deal, Assange was allowed to return to Australia without serving any more prison time. Supporters argue that his prosecution is dangerous for press freedom, while others believe that some of his activities, such as hacking into government databases, fall outside the scope of journalism.
