Abstract

The article examines how comparisons between Anne Frank's fate as a stateless Jewish refugee during Nazi-occupied Europe and contemporary mass deportations in the United States illuminate the challenges faced by stateless individuals but can also obscure historical context. It details the Frank family's legal residency in the Netherlands, their statelessness following the 1941 Reich Citizens Act, and how legal distinctions ceased to matter as deportations to concentration camps escalated. The piece highlights the ongoing global issue of statelessness, noting that millions remain without citizenship today, including an estimated 218,000 in the U.S., where current policies and political rhetoric complicate protections for stateless persons. Ultimately, the article underscores that Anne Frank's story serves as a reminder of the limits of legal protections amid state-led persecution.
