Abstract
The main focus of the article is an overview of Allied escape and evasion (E&E) operations during World War II, emphasizing British and American efforts to aid captured or endangered service personnel. It details the British MI9 and American MIS-X organizations, their cooperation, and the various escape lines operated by resistance groups and military personnel in occupied territories, such as the Comet and Shelburne Lines in Europe and the British Army Aid Group (BAAG) and American Air Ground Aid Service (AGAS) in Asia. The article also highlights notable escape operations, including those from Colditz prison and Cabanatuan, and provides statistics on personnel rescued, noting differences in survival rates between European and Asiatic theaters. Additionally, the article briefly reviews a separate study on African American state militias in the post-Civil War South, focusing on their organization, racial challenges, and eventual disbandment by 1906.
