Abstract

This article from History of War recounts the heroic actions of 1st Lieutenant Jimmie Monteith during the D-Day invasion on Omaha Beach. Monteith, an officer in the 1st Infantry Division, led his platoon in the assault on the Cabourg Draw, a heavily defended position. Despite heavy enemy fire, Monteith displayed exceptional bravery and leadership, coordinating with tanks and leading his men to destroy enemy positions. He ultimately sacrificed his life while fighting off counterattacks and was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his courage and gallantry. Monteith is buried in the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial, and his Medal of Honor is displayed at Virginia Tech. [Extracted from the article]
