Abstract

The article focuses on the human security impacts of the 2025 Thailand-Cambodia border conflict, emphasizing how civilian populations along the disputed Preah Vihear area experienced profound displacement, livelihood disruption, health insecurity, and education interruption. It argues that these human security challenges—displacement of approximately 750,000 people, destruction of homes and infrastructure, loss of income due to halted cross-border trade, closure of health facilities, and widespread school shutdowns—extend beyond immediate violence to undermine community resilience and social stability. The analysis highlights that civilian insecurity both results from and contributes to conflict escalation, suggesting that sustainable peace requires prioritizing civilian protection and the restoration of everyday services alongside ceasefire agreements. This perspective shifts focus from state-centric narratives to the lived realities of border communities, underscoring the importance of addressing humanitarian needs as integral to conflict management and durable de-escalation.
