Abstract

A mistrial was declared in the civil trial of a military contractor accused of contributing to the abuse of detainees at the Abu Ghraib Prison in Iraq. The jury was deadlocked and unable to reach a verdict after eight days of deliberation. This was the first time a U.S. jury heard claims brought by Abu Ghraib survivors in the 20 years since the shocking photos of detainee mistreatment were released. The contractor, CACI, argued that it was not complicit in the abuse and that any liability belonged to the government. The plaintiffs may seek a retrial. [Extracted from the article]
