Abstract
Perhaps Amos and Fanny immersed themselves in work for the New York Society for the Prevention of Pauperism or any one of the other one hundred or so poverty-relief societies that existed in New York by 1825.[46] Unfortunately the degree of either Amos's or Fanny's work in them between 1830 and 1832 is unknown, but during the summer of 1832 Amos Pollard's skill and savvy as a doctor raised his profile in New York. 112 Adjutant General, Texas, to Amos Pollard, Dr. for Services as Surgeon, Texas Republic Claim #1874, Reel #179 Set 1, 179600690. Boston offered economic opportunity that a rural community like Surry did not, but New England doctors always had to contend with two basic financial facts: cash-paying customers were in short supply and the competition was fierce between academy-trained physicians like Pollard, traditionally educated doctors like Daniel Adams, and self-educated medical practitioners like Samuel Thomson.
