Abstract

The British Museum will be hosting an exhibition called "Legion: Life in the Roman Army" from February 1 to June 23, 2024. The exhibition will focus on the daily lives of individuals who were part of the Roman army and will feature 200 objects, many of which have never been displayed in the UK before. The exhibition aims to shed light on how the Roman army served as a tool for social change, offering recruits from all walks of life the opportunity for increased rights and Roman citizenship. Visitors will learn about individual soldiers' stories, including an Egyptian recruit and a pair of soldiers murdered in Canterbury. The exhibition will also showcase artifacts related to the 79 CE eruption of Vesuvius, including the remains of a marine found at Herculaneum. The exhibition is highly anticipated and aims to showcase different perspectives and the lives of the men, women, and children who were part of one of the most famous armed forces in the world.
