Abstract

The article focuses on recent publications related to American military history, including a biography of Ulysses S. Grant and a study of U.S. naval aviation in World War II. Jack Hurst’s book, *America’s Hardscrabble General: Ulysses S. Grant from Farm Bay to Shiloh*, argues that Grant’s success stemmed from his humble Ohio farm background, perseverance, and practical common sense rather than formal military training. Stan Fisher’s *Sustaining the Carrier War* highlights the critical role of aviation technicians and training programs, including the contributions of Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service (WAVES) and African American sailors, in maintaining U.S. naval air power during the Pacific War. The article also notes the availability of a more affordable softcover edition of *Immortal Valor: The Black Medal of Honor Winners of World War II*.
