Abstract

In June 1944, several significant events took place during World War II. The month began with the largest seaborne invasion in history, known as D-Day, where 160,000 Allied troops crossed the English Channel and established five beachheads on the Normandy coast. Operation Fortitude successfully deceived the German defenders, and by the end of the month, 875,000 men had crossed the Channel. French leader Charles de Gaulle returned to France for the first time since its occupation, and the Battle of Saipan and the Battle of the Philippine Sea resulted in victories for the United States. Rome also fell to the Allies with minimal resistance. [Extracted from the article]
