Abstract

The paper explores the case of Izolyatsia, a Soviet-time insulation materials factory in the city of Donetsk, which was transformed into an art center in 2010, and later, in 2014, was seized by the representatives of the Donetsk People's Republic [1] (DPR) and turned into a torture prison controlled by the State Security Ministry of the DPR supervised by the Russian Federal Security Service. The author traces the transition of Izolyatsia from industrial production to immaterial production of lifestyles and meaning to the production of violence and, at the same time, the production of images through violence. Referring to the evidence of the former prisoners of Izolyatsia, the author shows how captives of Izolyatsia are being used as source material for the propagandistic images, and how tortures are used as a means to extract those images. The author introduces the concept of „image extraction infrastructure" to analyze the conversion of practices of violence and image production within the operation of the Izolyatsia torture camp, showing how the torture rooms of Izolyatsia, but also across the Russian-occupied territories, function as an extension of the Russian state-controlled media complex as image-production facilities.
