Abstract
"The Great Escape" is a film based on a real mass escape from a German POW camp in 1944. While the film is broadly accurate, it includes invented sequences for entertainment purposes. The role of American prisoners in the escape is exaggerated, as most had been transferred from the camp before it took place. The film also portrays Squadron Leader Roger Bartlett, based on Roger Bushell, who was suspected of being involved in the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich. The film includes dramatic additions that did not occur, such as a motorbike jump and a theft of a Luftwaffe aircraft. Only three out of 76 men who escaped were able to reach safety, and 50 were later executed on the personal orders of Adolf Hitler. [Extracted from the article]
