Abstract
Murray Pittock's hefty new book aims to be a comprehensive history of modern Scotland with a difference. In the Henry Dundas "debate", Pittock sides firmly with Scotland's parliamentary "manager" being a "delayer" (to quote Stephen Mullen[3]) regarding the end of the slave trade. The main arguments that Pittock wants to make about Scots' and Scotland's place in the world, most of which are absolutely correct, would have been more clearly served by shorter, more concise chapters, rather than the large 30-to-65-page ones he ends up with.
