Abstract

Chapter 1 examines U.S. policy towards Iraq in the years prior to the 1990-1991 Gulf War, looking specifically at how the United States tilted towards Iraq during the Iran-Iraq War using programs like I Operation Staunch i . However, the narrative would have benefited considerably from a deeper dive into the history of U.S.-Iraqi and U.S.-Iranian relations, where the United States adopted the traditional British imperialist policy of I divide et imperia i (divide and rule), which pit Iran against Iraq. One of the more confounding aspects during the lead-up to the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq was the eagerness of so many Americans - and especially their political representatives - to invade Iraq in 2003.
