Abstract

As the author rightly points out, if the British government continues to avoid public engagement on the issue of nuclear deterrence, it will miss out on the opportunity to explain "why nuclear deterrence is important to the UK", something that is currently "not understood well" (p. 226). Corbett has combined his power of scholarship with his personal experience as a former Trident submarine commander to put forward an analysis of how the UK's nuclear deterrence policy has evolved. Corbett shows how the risk of non-combatant casualties, inherent in the policy of nuclear deterrence, made successive British governments too uncomfortable to discuss their policy with the public.
