Abstract

The article focuses on Zambia's ambitions to leverage its mineral wealth, particularly copper, to reshape its economy and position in the global market. As Africa's second-largest copper producer, Zambia aims to quadruple its output by 2031, attracting significant private investment for mine expansions. Despite its rich resources, the country faces challenges such as high poverty rates, corruption, and reliance on foreign aid, which the current government seeks to reduce by promoting self-sufficiency and local sourcing in mining operations. The geopolitical landscape, particularly the U.S.-China rivalry, presents opportunities for Zambia to enhance its mineral processing capabilities and retain more value from its resources, while also addressing the need for accountability and sustainable practices in the mining sector.
