Abstract

The article focuses on the history and recent development of Geode Glen Park in Warsaw, Illinois. Once known for its deep swimming hole beneath a waterfall and abundant geodes—commonly called "fool's gold"—the site has transitioned from a natural swimming and fossil-collecting area to a community park featuring hiking trails, a nine-hole disc golf course, and log cabins used for seasonal events like Santa Claus gatherings. Efforts led by longtime park volunteer John Bavery and the Warsaw Park District have included clearing invasive plants, constructing recreational facilities, and planning further expansions such as a playground and hiking trail. The park also preserves local natural history, with fossils collected in the 1800s by Illinois’ first official geologist, Amos Worthen, now housed in the Illinois State Museum.
